reluctant to utilize a debugger

A debugger can assist you with addressing inquiries regarding what your code is doing.
The last word about debuggers: the first occasion when you find out about a debugger, it will take you longer to fix the issues with your code. After the 10th or so bug, it will truly begin to pay off. Furthermore, trust me, you will have far more than ten bugs in your programming profession.

I regularly observed students reluctant to utilize a debugger. These understudies truly made life hard on themselves, taking ages to discover straightforward bugs. The sooner you figure out how to utilize a debugger, the sooner it will pay off.
Search Out More Sources

If you don't get something, there's a decent chance how it was clarified simply didn't click.

To start with, search for elective clarifications. The web is loaded up with data about programming, and a few clarifications turn out better for various individuals; you may require pictures, another person may not. There are additionally loads of good books with point by point clarifications.

Yet, if that doesn't work, the most effortless approach to sort out where your misconception lies is to ask another person. Yet, attempt to go past saying, "I don't comprehend. It would be ideal if you clarify." You're probably going to get a connection back to a similar content you didn't comprehend. All things considered, reword your comprehension of the content in your words. The more your inquiry uncovers about your opinion, the simpler it will be for a proficient master to respond to it. Programmers at times have gained notoriety for being cantankerous about addressing questions, however, I think the explanation is that they need to gain ground in a discussion, and that requires the two sides to invest effort. On the off chance that you ask a savvy, nitty-gritty inquiry that shows you are figuring, you will by and large get great outcomes.

Data Security: What Happened

The challenges of 2020 will define 2021: With the pandemic still a reality, organizations and businesses of all sizes will need to cultivate flexibility and resiliency to adapt to the rapidly evolving threat landscape.

Working from home has become the new norm, and will likely continue to be for the foreseeable future. In 2021, at least 21% of US information workers will work primarily from home, compared with 7% in 2019

The pace of cloud transition will gather speed. Organizations that made the move to the cloud will expand their use of cloud-based collaboration and productivity tools, and companies that have lagged behind will come on board. Forrester anticipates that 30% of firms will continue to accelerate their spend on cloud in 2021, and the global public cloud infrastructure market will grow 35% to $120 billion.

Both external intruders and malicious insiders will seek to exploit the misconfigurations and other security gaps caused by the rapid transition to remote work, leading to more security incidents and downtime in 2021. The number of threats detected will also increase as organizations get better at spotting suspicious insider activity

Objectives of the exam

Head in the Cloud: Cloud computing, in general, has encountered a utilization blast among organizations, associations, and even individual clients, with Microsoft Azure being one of the most-loved platforms. Cloud computing technology provides comparatively a reduced upfront cost for access to so many services. Using Cloud computing is an easy decision, be it an individual or an entire corporation. It is not required to invest a huge sum of money in creating your own infrastructure or buying specialized hardware. Microsoft Azure renders all the fundamentals incorporating directories, email servers, web hosting, and storage, with a horde of other advantageous and convenient features to address everyone’s needs.
2. Continual Growth: There is around 90% of companies are making use of cloud technology. Truth be told, the development of cloud computing is outperforming the development of the entire IT area. This is obviously the surge of what might be in the future. Microsoft Azure contends with other distributed computing networks from Amazon and Google, yet Azure has figured out how to assemble a more regarded reputation among clients. As per Microsoft, each and every day, more than 1,000 new clients are pursuing Azure. The fact that around 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies are taking advantage of Microsoft Cloud is simply one more clue that Azure is the best and the most brilliant.
3. For the love of Azure: Azure being flexible is the most common reason that it is the first choice for many companies, individual users, and IT professionals. This flexibility translates directly into affordability as Cloud computing does not require purchasing pricey hardware, specialty software implementation, or maintenance. Microsoft Azure has a pay-as-you-go pricing feature, so you do not have to strain your budget to include resources that are of no use to you. Individuals, small and medium-sized corporations love this angle, as it permits them to remain well inside their methods while accepting premium cloud computing technologies. As they grow, they can expand abilities with more storage and features as per the requirements. Microsoft Azure has demonstrated to be one of the most secure stages to date, with elaborate privacy settings and assured security options on multiple levels. It has become the most believed distributed computing foundation of the U.S. government, an immediate impression of its dependability.

Using Metadata to Improve Search

Using metadata can help improve the native search capabilities, but there are some limitations. SharePoint offers a flexible approach to metadata management: You can apply formal taxonomies with limited term sets configured by administrators, or you can allow for user-driven metadata to be applied with your SharePoint environment. However, in either case, applying metadata to content within SharePoint can only be done manually Therefore, the task of content classification is not scalable for organizations that have large quantities of files stored in SharePoint.

Moreover, the results are often inconsistent. Tagging an entire content repository, file by file, is an immense undertaking that will most likely require many knowledge workers sharing the responsibility. Even if the organization makes its best effort to develop and communicate guidelines, every individual will naturally develop his or her interpretation and system for assigning metadata. If you are using managed taxonomies, workers are likely to simply choose the first tag in the list that is provided. If you are using user-driven metadata, it can get even worse. For example, one employee might use the tag “communication” while another favors “communique.” These kinds of semantic variations can produce confusion and inconsistency in search results and undermine the goal of streamlining a company’s knowledge assets to make them more orderly and discoverable.

What SharePoint sorely lacks is a native way to assign metadata automatically to files based on a data taxonomy. A data taxonomy allows a company to design a sound information architecture by classifying and organizing content stored in its knowledge management system. By enforcing semantic and categorical consistency across an entire knowledge base, a taxonomy can help ensure that content stays in compliance with regulatory standards and that out-of-compliance content can be readily discovered and flagged.

TON about databases

I opened up another CLI to my live instance and started doing a side-by-side comparison of things — checking authentication methods, permissions, configs, anything that could cause this authentication problem.

Then I logged into MySQL and noticed that there were 2 entries in the user table for my DBUser.

REMEMBER … I know a TON about databases (not!).

It’s a duplicate! Maybe that’s the problem!?? There’s a duplicate user! Maybe it hadn’t removed the original one from the old database?? I was so happy — maybe I fixed it!? OMG … maybe that’s it!

By this point, I had rebuilt this instance or restored from a backup at least 4 times, I had had countless people looking at it and making suggestions that didn’t work, I had spent hours and hours trying to Google the error. Everything came back authentication, so the logic that it could have been a duplicate user made sense in my addled brain.

Not wanting to be rash, I quickly ask someone (also not a DB admin), “Hey, do you think it could be a problem if there’s a duplicate in this table

Security Principals

A security principal is an identity that uses SQL Server and can be granted permission to access and modify data. Principals can be individuals, groups of users, roles or entities that are treated as people (such as dbowner, dbo or sysadmin).

Security principals can be created and managed in two ways:
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) — This environment is built for managing various SQL infrastructures, including SQL Server and Azure SQL Database. SMSS provides tools for:
SQL Server and database configuration, monitoring, and instance administration
Deploying, monitoring, and upgrading data-tier application components
Building queries and scripts
Transact-SQL (T-SQL) — This proprietary extension of SQL is central to utilizing Microsoft SQL services. All database commands provided in this article are T-SQL statements.

SQL Server supports role-based access control for security principals. Roles are similar to Microsoft Windows security groups: You define a variety of roles, assign permissions and restrictions, and add users to the server roles corresponding to their job duties. Permissions assigned to a particular role are inherited by all members of the role, so there is no need to create and manage unique permission sets for individual users.

Both server-level and database-level roles can be used.

How to Manage Tenant-Wide Sharing

Allow anyone with the resource link to access the resource and forward the link to others. This option is selected by default, but it’s recommended that you change the external sharing setting to Only people in your organization. Beware of leaving the Anyone option selected, as it opens the door to uncontrolled sharing with anonymous, unauthenticated users and may put sensitive data at risk.

If you elect to allow sharing with Anyone, you can improve document management and security by configuring these recommended advanced settings:
Configure Anyone links to expire after a certain period of time.
Restrict guest links to allow only view access to files and folders.
Restrict default links to be accessible to Only people in your organization.
Enable the ATP safe attachments feature.
Restrict external sharing with users from blocked domains.

The sharing settings configured in Azure AD override the sharing settings configured in the Microsoft 365 admin center or SharePoint admin center. For example, if you allow external sharing via the Microsoft 365 admin center but disable external sharing through Azure AD, the Azure AD setting takes precedence and external sharing will be turned off for your organization.

Getting into IT with CompTIA A+

“It wasn’t a good time for a cross-country move,” he explained. But in a twist of fate, the recruiter he’d contacted while he was in the process of earning his certification told him about an IT analyst/help desk position with a government agency in Michigan. He applied for and landed the job, proving that it’s possible to get into IT without a degree.

“I went from having no IT experience in February 2020 to earning the CompTIA A+ certification and getting a competitive IT job by the beginning of April that same year,” Clark said. “Earning CompTIA A+ gave me the advantage I needed to get that job.”

“I had zero knowledge of IT at that point. I knew I needed to get an IT certification to make myself a viable candidate for the job, so I decided to pursue the CompTIA A+ certification,” Clark said. “My lack of IT experience intimidated me somewhat. However, since I was coachable, hungry to earn the certification and had a whatever-it-takes attitude, I knew I had a shot at passing the exam.”

He let the hiring manager know that he planned to earn CompTIA A+ before the start of the job, and he was offered an interview.

communication that crosses networks

In today’s modern networking, we use the TCP/IP suite of protocols for communication that crosses networks. The postal service provides a vehicle for understanding how logical addressing using IP protocol works.

The processes and procedures associated with logical networking as it relates to subnetting and supernetting are beyond the scope of this article.

What is important is that you understand that a portion of an IP address is allocated for both network and host identification. Devices that are located on the same network will be able to communicate effectively at layer 2. Devices that are on different networks will communicate by directing their output data to routers that will be charged with the responsibility of delivery.

When a unit is placed in a mobile home community, it is typically located on a lot (often referred to as a space). The lot address can be used for postal service purposes. As you know, if you want to mail a package from one mobile home to another, serial numbers won’t work. But if you address the package properly, using the format the postal service requires, we have some assurance of delivery.

How to Identify, Develop

Earlier this year, Gary Bixler, CompTIA’s vice president of global communities, led one of the weeklong sessions, relaying a number of tips and tricks for tech vendors to be more successful with their partners. Each class tackled different aspects of channel partnerships and provided proactive steps that vendors could take back to their respective companies.

The need to better understand your partner base was impressed upon Bixler several years ago when he worked for a global tech vendor. On a business trip to Singapore, Bixler visited a technology mall, common in the region, to talk with various partners selling his company’s products. Everywhere he went, his group was welcomed with open arms and the partners talked about the value of relationships. But after Bixler’s initial flight home was cancelled, he had an extra day and went back to the mall alone and dressed casually. It was a much different visit with the same partners.

“I tried to engage in conversations, but the salespeople refused to talk, refused to talk about selling our product. It was an eye-opening experience,” he said. “I thought I knew how our business was operating and how partners were engaging and supporting us in that region. I was missing some big things.”

Resume Templates and Tools

Soft skills, hard skills, nunchuck skills — you’ve got a lot to offer. But it doesn’t matter how awesome your skills are. If your resume stinks, no one is going to read it. Even if you feel like your resume is in decent shape, it could benefit from a fresh design or layout.

Take advantage of resume templates and generators that bring the quality of a professional designer to your resume and make it say, “Hire me. I’m worth it.”

Now that you’ve found a layout that’s sleek, modern, and professional. It’s time to think about the content of your resume. Here’s a few tips that’ll help you convince any hiring manager that you’re the best fit for the role:
Keep it simple. Don’t undercut your accomplishments with fancy illustrations, graphs, and pie charts. Keep it clean. Keep it simple.
Make it relevant. While those nunchuck skills might impress your friends, if they don’t match the job requirements, it’s best to leave them off your resume. Read the job description to find out which skills are most relevant.
Cut the fluff. Most hiring managers don’t need to know about your first job in high school. If you didn’t hold the position in the past 10–15 years, cut it. And always list your most recent job first.
Proofread — always. A resume riddled with errors and misspellings is sure to get tossed in the trash. Always review your resume with fresh eyes to make sure it’s clean. Maybe even have a trusted friend or colleague give it a quick read before you send it off.

Tips on Passing the Exam

As you now have pretty much all the information that you need to know considering the certification in general, you need to prioritize a few things if you want to seriously clear the examination in a single attempt. From the lab and written exam description, you must have come to the understanding that this certification is not a joke and definitely not an entry level certification. That is why some serious focus is required to pass it, and only consistent trying and perseverance will get you through. You need to take another thing into consideration, and that is you don't need some excessive training for the sake of passing the written exam. Simply some knowledge about the CCIE certification, in general, will suffice.

Because you will get some extended time frame to prepare for the lab exam, it is recommended that you only focus on the written exam first without worrying about the lab exam. Following are some of the tips that can help you to pass the examination almost in a single try;
Practice for Lab

As illustrated earlier, it is not that hard to pass the written exam provided that you have some raw knowledge of how networking works and have read a lot about the CCIE certification from Cisco handbooks or some other study material. The lab exam is the real deal, and this is what you need to prepare for. Try to do as much practice as you can and cover each and every topic in depth. Ask questions from your lab trainers when you run into some trouble and get your concepts in order.

online learners continue to work

You’ll make significant connections with like-minded Learners, but you won’t have any mandatory in-person classes. You’ll get plenty of 1:1 attention, but you won’t have a professor waving deadlines in your face or hovering over your shoulder. You don’t even have to wear pants to class if you don’t want to. Entire courses are designed to fit your schedule and your learning style.

Many online learners continue to work full-time at their current job while training for a better, more rewarding career. Others care for families, serve in the military, or just live an exciting life. This level of flexibility — and no commute — means less interference with your work / life / training balance.

A common misconception about alternative education is that the quality of your training will be less than that received in a traditional environment. This couldn’t be more wrong!

In fact, studies show that you can learn 5 times more material for every hour of training with an online provider. That’s because most online courses are made up of short, digestible modules, which makes content easier to absorb. A variety of methods — videos, infographics, and hands-on learning — contribute to this, too.

What is the Difference Between CMMC, DFARS

In order to be DFARS compliant, organizations must pass an assessment that follows NIST 800-171. NIST 800-171 supplies clear guidelines on the best practices for information security. The primary goal of NIST 800-171 is to protect the confidentiality of unclassified information and reduce the risk of data breaches. NIST 800-171 influences standards like DFARS and the CMMC.

CMMC is the DoD’s next step in protecting national security data and networks from cyberattacks. CMMC shares the same goals as DFARS but reevaluates how the government categorizes vendors’ cybersecurity posture. CMMC adds on DFARS by clarifying security controls and adding additional requirements for compliance. This model ranks the maturity of a vendor’s cybersecurity program from “Basic Cybersecurity Hygiene” to “Advanced” based upon their data protection efforts. The achievement of higher CMMC levels enhances the contractor’s ability to protect CUI and guard against adversary attacks. Unlike DFARS, CMMC requires assessments to be conducted by Third Party Assessment Organizations.

The version of CMMC is continually being updated. You can find the latest version here:

https://www.acq.osd.mil/cmmc/draft.html

At Alpine Security, we include a baseline and bi-annual CMMC audit in our CISO-as-a-Service program. We evaluate a vendor’s practices and processes in comparison with the cybersecurity controls required in NIST 800-171. Following the initial assessment, we prepare a “Cybersecurity Roadmap” outlining the steps to achieve desired CMMC compliance.

Have a Cybersecurity Risk Management Program

The best thing you can do is to establish regular cybersecurity training for your employees. You should also keep them up to date on new scams, especially those impacting your industry. Use an IM channel for cybersecurity updates that all employees see.

Empowering your team to be part of the cybersecurity solution will make them more alert and cautious of clicking a suspicious link.

Remote work didn’t create cybersecurity challenges. It is, however, creating new ones and exposing gaps. Every organization, no matter the size or industry, should have a cybersecurity risk management program.

Often, such a program is hard to develop and implement because internal teams lack the knowledge or bandwidth. That’s why so many companies turn to trusted experts in the space. With such a plan, you’ll have a continuous, proactive approach to data security, without the burden of it creating it and sustaining it.

As remote work and cybersecurity become more intertwined, it’s time to revisit your cybersecurity goals and challenges. Let our team of professionals help. Contact us today to learn more about our solutions.

The Acquisition Cybersecurity Checklist

If your organization is purchasing another business, there are key moves to make before, during, and after the acquisition. This cybersecurity assessment should play a big role in how you bring the company into the fold.
What to Do Pre-Acquisition
Perform a risk assessment or security audit: Engage third-party experts to evaluate IT operations from a cybersecurity perspective thoroughly.
Dissect the risk profile: After the assessment, you should be digging into the risk profile to determine the level of maturity of cybersecurity as well as critical gaps.
Consider any legal or compliance requirements: Depending on the industry and location, you should review the assessment to determine compliance with regulatory requirements (i.e., HIPAA for healthcare).
What to Do During the Acquisition
Review the policies in place for incident response, business continuity, and disaster recovery, if available.
Develop an asset inventory list to determine all the physical, logical, software, and other equipment related to IT operations.
Check on physical security measures related to assets on-prem and those in co-location data centers.
Determine what, if any, access controls are in place.
Create a plan to integrate, migrate, or consolidate the IT infrastructure. You’ll need a detailed plan on how you’ll move data and applications from their control to yours. Alternatively, you may decide they should remain separate but weigh the options of this in terms of accessibility and costs.

SUSE

SUSE fits into many of the same use cases as Red Hat with a few differences. One of the most notable is SUSE’s use of YaST out of the box. Whether you should pick Red Hat or SUSE probably comes down to the fields you’d like to work in or cert you are studying for.

Cities Where Your Money Goes Further

For example, Columbus, Ohio, gets top billing as the most affordable Tech Town on the index this year. The cost of living here is 6% lower than the national average. IT pros earn a median salary of $88,099. But, adjusted for the lower cost of living, that number feels more like $93,226 – comparable to actual earnings for IT pros in Raleigh, North Carolina; Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina; Dallas, Texas; and Trenton, New Jersey.

Of course, cost of living isn’t the only factor. There is a range of factors that influence what your IT salary could be, like years of experience and regional market value.

As you explore IT career path options, use the CompTIA IT Salary Calculator to estimate your salary and know your worth during your job search. The calculator includes salary data from 400 different metro areas, covering 85% of the U.S. population.

If you’re following along in the calculator, you can see that these numbers track. In the section above, the median salary for IT pros (in general) in Columbus is just about $88,000. But if you dig deeper and research a more in-demand IT occupation, like IT security careers, you’ll see your earning potential increases.

paying the ransom rarely works

However, new research continues to show that paying the ransom rarely works in a business’s favor. For instance, businesses that do not pay lose an average of $732,000 in downtime, remediation costs and the like, but businesses that pay end up losing, on average, $1,448,000. This is consistent with other findings that indicate only 26% of the enterprises that paid a ransom actually got their data back.

The perception though, not the reality, is what moves end users and businesses to pay up – and what keeps ransomware spreaders in business. There are other understandable, very human weaknesses that ransomware spreaders have been taking advantage of throughout the pandemic. A flood of ransomware vectors disguised as pandemic-related news links is one of them. Since the pandemic is the news these days, links related to therapeutics, vaccine timelines and the like provide bad actors an opportunity to deceive.

And since they are remote versus on site with an IT department, employees may need to install video conferencing software and other programs they might not be familiar with. Ransomware can be disguised as these business-critical tools.

Simply put, we’re living in a world where people are more easily tricked and more likely to pay, and the technological fail safes we rely on to protect ourselves are compromised as well. As with all pandemic-related challenges, protecting enterprises from ransomware given these circumstances is an intimidating task.

From cloud-first architecture to shifting channel dynamics, the 10 trends in this year’s report help clarify the blueprint for future success.

According to IDC’s latest estimates, most of the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic will hit the industry in 2020. Global revenue is projected to be $4.8 trillion, down from the original estimate of $5.2 trillion. In 2021, IDC is projecting global revenue of $5.0 trillion, an increase of 4.2%. If that holds, it would represent a return to the type of growth the industry saw prior to 2020.Of course, that’s a big if. Companies in CompTIA’s survey are mostly concerned about lingering effects from the pandemic, especially customers continuing to postpone purchases. On the other hand, there is a real need to transform operations. The top factor that could drive positive growth is additional business from existing customers as they add more pieces to any quick fixes from 2020.

Build a range of technical skills.

While most of the IT pros surveyed work in end user IT departments, the approaches being taken by these teams in 2021 also apply to technical staff at channel firms. The biggest takeaway is that companies are building skill across all four pillars of CompTIA’s IT Framework. There are networking and cloud skills needed for infrastructure roles, user experience and quality assurance skills needed for software developers, compliance knowledge and risk analysis skills needed for cybersecurity roles, and database administration and data management expertise needed for handling corporate data. There is still a space for generalists in an IT environment, but the complexity of IT solutions is driving more specialization. If hiring is not an option, in-house training is essential for keeping the workforce up to speed.

Use Cases of Chatbots with DevOps

The next significant point of discussion about chatbots in DevOps refers to the use cases. You can find many chatbots with higher responsiveness and intelligence capabilities for addressing different tasks. On the other hand, industry implementations are marginally different from day to day activities. The use cases of chatbots in DevOps demand the efficient resolution of problems with desired approaches.

The two most common types of use cases for chatbots with DevOps involve domain-specific bot implementation or generative bot implementation.

The chatbots act as the missing link between the collaboration tool of your choice and DevOps tools such as AWS Lex, Hubot, ErrBot, or Lita. The final component in ChatOps is the target platform or the infrastructure. Chatbots in DevOps should have the capability for integration with the desired target platforms.

The target platforms are the stage for the chatbots to execute required commands. The integration with DevOps tools enables chatbots to ensure communications with tools and ensure execution of actions such as building, deployment, testing, provisioning, and scaling of infrastructure from the chat window directly.

Sourcing the Right IT Talent

Competitive recruiting tactics, scarcity of highly skilled IT talent, and continued remote work conditions have spurred employers to adapt how they recruit and maintain tech workers, according to industry leaders in a session titled “Injecting Talent into Your Organisation” at CompTIA's 2020 EMEA Member and Partner Conference.

CompTIA’s Graham Hunter, vice president, skills certification, EMEA, met with Ben Hansford, managing director, apprenticeships at Firebrand, and Aaron Saxton, director of training and education at UKFast, to discuss current talent acquisition trends and strategies.

As customer demand for cloud and cybersecurity solutions surged in response to COVID-19, so too did employer demand for developers, engineers, designers, and data scientists who build and support those solutions. IT companies were willing to pay more as well as cast a wider net for qualified candidates.

“We’re seeing it, day in, day out. Inflated salaries, temporary recruitment, massive recruitment fees, an increase in poaching of overseas talent… There was a skills shortage pre-COVID that has only widened,” said Hansford.

For some candidates, the economic and societal uncertainties caused by COVID-19 resulted in a need to stay put. According to Saxton, “as the result of COVID and the instability of jobs and careers, [workers] are sticking to who and what they know right now.”

How Has Hiring for Entry Level IT Jobs

“Because employers have more flexibility, some opportunities are starting out working from home, which allows companies to look outside of just their immediate surroundings,” Angela says.

So, how should a budding IT professional adapt? Angela has advice there, too.

“It is very important to stay competitive and relevant upon entering into the IT/cybersecurity realm,” she says. “If you are provided the opportunity to obtain your certifications, then I would absolutely recommend it, especially coming into the field. They are definitely ways to gain employer interest and give them an idea of the knowledge and talent you could potentially bring to their organization.”

Certifications are a must and in the future CompTIA Security+ won’t be enough,” Francisco says. “They are already looking to hire people with multiple or higher-tier level certifications. IT college degrees are recommended but not required. An IT degree doesn’t get you through the door; it only makes you a little more competitive. Department of Defense clearances are more difficult to obtain since employers do not have the funding to sponsor new hires without one. Having a clearance will be a must.”

Once you get your certifications, it’s time to start applying. Like Angela, Francisco emphasised the differences in the application process compared to just a year ago. Here’s what to expect and how to approach.

Routing and Switching Basics

With the proliferation of worldwide broadband internet in the past few years, nearly all of us have become accustomed towards seeing routers in our homes, offices, coffee shops, and other places. We know these routers as devices that allow us to get connected to the world wide web.
In network environments, routers have the same basic functionality i.e. to act as an endpoint that provides connectivity between network resources and the web. They differ from switches in the way that they act on a much larger scale and connect networks in contrast to switches, which connect computers together.
Switches don’t have any connection to the internet but routers do, making them the first point of contact for any data packet that wants to enter a certain network.
Network Security- An Overview
By now, you might have understood that these two components are those points in the system from where data of any kind flows through machines and networks. However, their utility and functionality also make them extremely vulnerable to any attack trying to penetrate the system or its resources.
Cyber attackers often target these two components as they know that if they succeed, they can gain control of the entire network and expand their attack horizon to cause a significant amount of damage financially as well as in terms of data loss.

mobile device management solutions

The alternative is to focus on device security. There’s no way to control the Wi-Fi at each employee’s house. The better approach is to develop security infrastructures that support devices with MDM (mobile device management) solutions. IT can then have visibility at the device level and enforce multi-factor authentication, update malware programs, and install software patches.
Secure File Storage and Sharing

If your organization isn’t using a secure cloud-based solution for storage and sharing of files, it will be hard for them to work together. There are many options, and companies big and small often just use Google Drive.

However, there are lots of downsides to using such a platform. You don’t own it or control it, so it’s hard to manage the security aspect. Instead, find a solution that not only provides accessibility to employees no matter where they are but also has layers of cybersecurity protections so that you can have peace of mind that your business and customer data is safe.
Continuous Authorization

Your employees are probably using a variety of devices at home and logging into web-based applications necessary to carry out their roles. This trend has led to the deterioration of perimeter-based security. This challenge isn’t new — it’s just more complex now.

project management skills

Even beyond the pandemic, this is a great career track because the industry itself recognizes how important this is now,” he said. “Complementary to that comes all of the tooling and all the frameworks, that excess server side, which is the cloud side. Expertise in cloud computing, especially as it relates to dev ops, is a really valuable and necessary skill during the pandemic.”

Mangold adds people with cloud skills are “extremely important” in the current remote work paradigm, and expects organizations will continue to need talent with people who can deploy cloud solutions.

“We are much more reliant on our cloud services than ever before, so we’re looking for people who have experience in the public cloud, be it Google, Azure, AWS, et cetera, and people who have shifted their experience to those spaces, because they can bring their expertise to our shift as well,” she explains.

Looking into the future, Mangold sees a sustained need not only for specific skill sets like security, networking, and service management, but also for project management skills, and for people who have stellar communications skills and the ability to adapt.

Reasons Why You Should Get CompTIA A+ Certification

Today, customer care and servicing is a crucial part of a sales deal. If something goes wrong, you always have the option to call the vendors to resolve it. However, wouldn’t it be more effective if your team already possess the basic troubleshooting knowledge to address some common issues that occur almost daily?

CompTIA A+ does just the thing. The newer version of the certification gives professionals the necessary hardware and networking troubleshooting skills to deal with those common daily issues.

Develops habits to learn new things

To pass the exam, your employees need to learn a lot about the fundamentals of different devices. CompTIA A+ certifies that your team has appropriate knowledge for an entry-level PC service professional. This means that they know how to install, customize, and maintain different devices.

Furthermore, this motivates your team to learn and develop the habit of learning new things now and then, helping your organization in many ways. You will be able to get multiple tasks completed by the same person, saving time and money compared to hiring a new professional.

A base for higher certification

If your employees have more than five years of IT knowledge and you want to get them certified with an intermediate level of CompTIA certification, then CompTIA A+ certification is the first step towards it. Not only that, CompTIA A+ certification will help your team to get any other certification as it builds fundamental knowledge and skills about computer devices that are common in any certification.

technological innovation

If you think about the simple Maslow hierarchy, we understand that there are base-level needs. In many cases, we have individuals who may be homeless, and maybe youth who are justice-involved, or adults who are justice-involved. They may have some sort of real barrier that's disallowing them from moving to the next stage in life… towards actualizing their goals.
And so, …to get people to that self-actualization of broadened economic prosperity is help individuals overcome those barriers. Wherever those barriers are, we're trying to identify those upfront. Whether it's a skills gap barrier. Whether it's things like childcare, access to transportation. It's overcoming maybe generational poverty. Whatever might keep individuals from moving to that next level. …We want to focus on removing the barriers with the goal of really helping all Missourians who want to go to work to be able to go to work and not have anything that's in their way.
The second thing… We want to keep [people] working in Missouri. How do we make our workforce more productive in Missouri, more what I call resilient, in Missouri? What that means is – with acceleration of technology, and the jobs, roles and tasks changing so rapidly – we need to make sure that individuals have the skill set and have access to gaining the new skills that are needed to compete and succeed in today's marketplace.
That means reinvesting in our workers, our incumbent workers, the people who maybe [earned] that degree or that certification, a number of years ago. They're quite successful, but they can't grow. They can't move on to what's next. Or maybe now they're going to be vulnerable when the next wave of technological innovation occurs. And so, we need to be investing to create a more productive workforce and one that's more dynamic and one that can be more flexible… to achieve that goal of resilience.

How will AI affect cyber security?

With the use of AI, most of the tasks are automated, and these AI-powered apps are used in every sector like healthcare, education, military, etc. The data from these smart devices is collected from a set of sensors such as heat, light, weight, speed, or noise. The machine learning certification training and technology is directly connected with the security of digital devices and our data/information. There has been an extensive progression in the artificial intelligence sector. And in today’s modern age, where all our devices are connected either to the internet or some other modes of networks, the risks of security issues and the need for Artificial Intelligence solutions have skyrockete.

Let’s face it, everyone uses the internet, and for that we need a web-browser. It’s common knowledge that there are billions of people who use the internet everyday and for hours. We use browsers on every device we own no matter it’s our smartphone, tab, laptops. The Internet is a crucial part of our lifestyle; there is no denying this fact. However, Artificial Intelligence only has the power to predict potential cyber security risks and take feasible countermeasures and to block them even before time. However, practicing privacy enhancement methods plays a vital role in developing secure habits that can save us, users from any malicious attack attempt on our IoT devices.

becoming a cybersecurity analyst.

Security vulnerabilities helped lead to an overall 68% increase in threats, attacks and vulnerabilities in 2020 alone. One of many reasons is the increase in cloud-based software development. This growth has led to an overall increase in software production. The end result is a larger number of software vulnerabilities across the internet.

Security analysts must be aware and knowledgeable in a slew of software vulnerabilities, such as the following:
Improper error handling
Dereferencing
Insecure object reference
Race condition

There are a few options for cybersecurity analysts depending on where you land. Smaller businesses may ask you to manage information security analysis tasks and intrusion detection, while larger companies may deploy a security operations center (SOC) and divide those responsibilities amongst a team. A global organization may ask you to specialize in a SOC on a team that centralizes cybersecurity efforts.

It’s no surprise that the demand for cybersecurity analysts is huge. In the next eight years, CompTIA projects an increased demand of 32% for cybersecurity analysts. And, you’ll be rewarded for your knowledge. According to CyberSeek, cybersecurity analysts earn an average salary of $96,000.

Take the Network+ exam first

I did not take the Network+ exam first, despite many people suggesting this approach. I’m going through the Network+ content after the fact, and the foundational knowledge would have been very helpful. If you’re able to teach yourself, you’ll pick up much of the material just by prepping for the Security+ exam and googling all the acronyms. The textbook I purchased for Sec+ also reviewed many of the networking concepts. That said, I could’ve breezed through some of the questions if I had greater command of networking concepts—especially for the applied questions.

Do not discount hands-on experience

The Sec+ exam is not just 90 multiple-choice questions about security terminology. Many of the exam questions test the application of cybersecurity knowledge, such as mapping physical security components to an office layout, or finding a clear-text password in a packet. The exam book came with step-by-step instructions for many security activities. Do them! It’ll save you from the mid-exam, head-in-hands panic.
What Next?

Once you pass the Security+ exam, what next? First, take a minute to celebrate! Then, once you’ve properly celebrated, it’s time to prepare for the next steps in your cyber career. The Sec+ exam requires that you earn 50 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) every three years in order to maintain the certification. You can earn CEUs a number of different ways, from writing blogs (like this one) to taking online courses on Cybrary. If you’re engaged in the industry, this will happen organically—just remember to keep track of the activities. My final piece of advice: get involved with the community, and have some good old security fun!

DICTIONARY OF DIGITAL BUSINESS

Welcome to the World’s first Dictionary of Digital Business! While the concept of digital transformation is not particularly new (people have been using the terms since at least the 1990s and in various forms much earlier than that), the phrase itself is surprisingly elusive and ill-defined. So too are many of the terms and concepts associated with digital business. Even when definitions exist, they are rarely standardized, agreed upon, or collected in the same place. While the ubiquity of the Internet and open collaboration model of Wikipedia seem to make structured dictionaries and encyclopedias obsolete (read below how Encyclopaedia Britannica has gone digital), organized and vetted knowledge still has a role to play in supporting communities of practice and in creating shared language.

This article is the preamble to the World’s First Dictionary of Digital Business and provides its justification, background, description of content, organization, and planned evolution. Last, this article will share a brief history of the rise and fall of structured and unstructured knowledge, forming the foundation for how we understand and use words today and the inspiration for this dictionary.

A germane and useful example can be found in the words digitize and digitalize. Both Merriam-Webster and Cambridge Dictionaries define digitize as something along the lines of:

To convert data (photographs, sound, printed text) into a form that can be processed by computers. To start to use digital technology.

managed service provider uses an online service portal to allow customers to add features and make changes to contracted services. The managed service provider uses the same system to monitor traffic to the customer’s website and generates real-time dashboards and reports to the customer to help understand consumer demand and patterns of business activity. Using AIOps tools, the managed service provider is able to add or remove resources when required (without the need to disturb the customer). What’s more, the same AIOps tools provide predictive analytics that the managed service provider uses to inform relationship meetings with the customer.

Digital IT organizations are concerned with managing back-office systems, but they concentrate more on external customers and ensuring that external-facing systems (e.g., websites, portals, platforms, ordering systems) are meeting customer needs. The focus on the end-customer introduces a certain volatility since customer preferences tend to change rapidly, and digital IT departments become accustomed to and even comfortable with ambiguity and unpredictability.

In reality, many IT Departments are somewhere in between traditional IT and the truly digital organization and are struggling to make the transition. In the next section, we discuss the skills that can help bridge the gap and how to build practices around them.

Flexible Support Options

MSPs developed solutions to help keep customer operations running in the wake of layoffs.

As Whittles put it, “A lot of clients had a really hard time in lockdown, particularly retail and hospitality sectors. They’ve had to do things like downsizing staff and head office counts. And in many places they have looked to us to provide them with solutions to absorb some of that work.”
Planning for 2021 and Thriving

For vendors and distributors, planning for 2021—and thriving—means anticipating partners’ questions and finding solutions.

Watts said, “[Partners are] going to come to us and say, “What do we need to do next as a business? Do we need to do something different than we did before? How do we shore up our business so that we don’t find ourselves in this situation again?”

For many MSPs, lockdown has provided them the opportunity to gather critical customer business intelligence and plan for the year ahead.

“We’ve been working on a number of cloud migrations so we’re using this time as an opportunity to improve that overall infrastructure, plan for the future, improve scalability and robustness and apply emerging technologies where we can,” Whittles shared.

cybersecurity career at the help desk.

Where CompTIA A+ considers connectivity from the perspective of the user and their device, CompTIA Network+ focuses on the connections from (and between) the core systems to the endpoint devices. It validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to design, configure, manage and troubleshoot wired and wireless networks. To best support and ultimately secure the systems that exchange information on your network, you must first understand how the network functions.

CompTIA A+ and CompTIA Network+ follow a progression consistent with the KSAs an IT professional exhibits as they move from an early career technical support role with 9 to 12 months of general IT experience to one with 1 to 2 years of general IT experience, and with a significant part of that specific to network support and administration.

CompTIA Network+ is also an important and strongly recommended prerequisite to CompTIA Security+. Before you can secure a network, you must understand how it functions. In other words, you shouldn’t skip algebra and start with calculus. Otherwise, you are learning security skills and applying them to a network you don’t understand.
Now that we’ve covered the IT certifications in the cybersecurity pathway, let’s explore some of the common questions surrounding it.

new question types are graded

Two important pieces of information about the new drag-and-drop and performance-based questions that you need to know:
Partial credit – Scoring credit may be offered if a candidate answers only part of a question correctly.
No negative credit – CompTIA does not employ negative scoring on exam questions, so you won’t lose points for incorrect answers. A candidate should answer every exam question, even on the ones where they are not sure of the answer.

Testing strategies:

The new question types, like drag-and-drop and performance-based questions, show up at the beginning of the exams. These questions can be more complex and take longer to answer than traditional multiple-choice questions. DON’T GET BOGGED DOWN WITH THE PERFORMANCE-BASED QUESTIONS. You can skip questions and come back and answer them at the end. Here are some strategies to use when taking the exams:
Skip the performance-based questions and come back at the end to answer them so you aren’t bogged down and run out of time
Count the performance-based questions as you skip them so you know how many you have to do when you come back to them at the end
Read over all the performance-based questions and answer the ones you are most comfortable with first; leave the ones you are less confident about until the end
If you are not sure about some of the steps in the performance-based or drag-and-drop questions, give it your best guess, you may receive partial credit.

MFA is enhanced security

MFA is an effective way to provide enhanced security. Traditional usernames and passwords can be stolen, and they’ve become increasingly more vulnerable to brute force attacks. MFA creates multiple layers of security to help increase the confidence that the user requesting access is actually who they claim to be. With MFA, a cybercriminal may steal one credential but will be thwarted by having to verify identity in a different manner.

As processing speeds of CPUs have increased, brute force attacks have become a real threat. Further developments like GPGPU password cracking, rainbow tables and now the Quantum computers have provided greater advantages for the attackers. GPGPU cracking, for example, can produce more than 500,000,000 passwords per second, even on lower end gaming hardware. Depending on the particular software, rainbow tables can be used to crack 14-character alphanumeric passwords in about 160 seconds. Recently, a paper released by Google’s researchers that was briefly posted on a Nasa’s website before being removed, claimed that their processor was able to perform a calculation in three minutes and 20 seconds that would take today’s most advanced classical computer, known as Summit, approximately 10,000 years. With these capabilities, a password database alone doesn’t stand a chance against such methods when it is a real target of interest.

In the past, MFA systems typically relied upon two-factor authentication. Increasingly, vendors are using the label “multifactor” to describe any authentication scheme that requires more than one identity credential.

Tips for Working a Remote IT Job

Doing IT from home takes some discipline. After Blake landed his job, he needed to figure out how best to make it happen.

“It really kind of sunk in,” he commented. “I had to get my footing. How does this working-remote thing work? I ended up figuring it out.”

Follow these tips from experienced remote IT pros to help you be more successful.
1. Make Sure You Have Remote Access to Systems

Connectivity is key when working an IT job remotely. You can only be successful if you have the right access and a solid internet connection.

Hempel suggested that mock interviewing is especially important for remote IT interviews. Mock interviews can help you prepare to answer IT-specific questions and become familiar with the process prior to trying it in a real-life situation.

“Mock interviews help you think through an IT process from start to finish so you can anticipate any unknowns in the remote interview process,” she said.

The great thing about being a remote worker is that physical location is no longer a barrier to finding your ideal career fit.

“Working remote really expands options for businesses,” Blake said. “They’re no longer limited by geography and can find the right talent for the job.”

concern in remote work environments

Convenience and security are typically opposing forces—when one goes up the other goes down. There was a dramatic increase in security issues at the beginning of coronavirus that put companies in a compromised security position because they had to let everybody work remotely instantly.
Wendell: The uptick in phishing scams was tough. The weakest link is always people. Seth: Someone recently asked me, what gets in the way of IT teams being able to do what they need to do? I think there's a lot of culture in it. What needs to start happening, if you're being strategic with IT and trying to futureproof, is that the IT team needs to put together an ROI statement and say, if we invest this much, this is what we expect to happen. That hasn't always been done because IT has been more of a cost center. Moving forward, how much does IT need to be able to show value in what they're doing to upper management?

Robert: A new startup can go 100% cloud relatively easily. They're not worried about anything in the past; they don't have old database servers. Most companies don't have that luxury, especially if you have hundreds of employees. Then there are old habits. Until this year, there was no urgency to enable staff to work from home. Once the urgency hit, corporate directives changed on a dime.

Cybersecurity Risks Phishing Attacks

Just like every other crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic has rocked the boats of most businesses. The fact that it has discouraged physical interactions has forced enterprises to embrace work from home initiatives. Most companies have had to increase their reliance on collaborative technology to keep their business operations afloat.

Sadly, while businesses are busy adapting to the new normal, hackers and threat actors have been taking advantage of the security loophole introduced by working from home. Most of these loopholes have been around for a long time, but the pandemic aggravates the threats they pose. If your business fails to look for solutions to these threats, you stand to lose a lot.

Contrary to the norm, employees now have to communicate heavily through phone calls, emails, and social platforms. As such, it is easier for cybercriminals to send out phishing scams. A hacker could easily send out emails to an unknowing employee in the façade of a trusted authority in your business. If your employee isn’t careful enough, they could click on the email and end up downloading malware.

In other cases, these attacks result in the employees offering threat actors private information about the company or even sending out unwarranted payments. Aside from these direct attacks, hackers have also been preying on the need to know for all things COVID-19-related.

There has been a spike in the number of fraudulent links being shared on social media that claim to provide COVID-19-related information. Something as simple as an employee clicking on these links could be detrimental to your data security. The best way to tackle this threat would be to hire security experts to educate employees on how to spot and avoid current and emerging phishing attacks.
